SMG’s Benchmark Database says no! While many restaurants are hesitant to have their servers point out menu items to their customers, SMG has found recommendations actually INCREASE customer satisfaction. Suggestive selling with the goal of upselling has added benefits for both customers and restaurants. Not only does suggestive selling lead to higher ticket prices, but the customers also feel like they are receiving special treatment by being offered specific appetizers, specials, entrées, and desserts. Such treatment allows the customers to have a more satisfying experience overall at the restaurant—as seen in the 22% increases in both highly satisfied customers and customers who are likely to recommend. What have we learned? Recommend a menu item to your customer, and your customer will recommend you!
