Our Employee Spotlight series gives you a behind-the-scenes peek at what makes SMG work—our people. Learn more about our team and get to know Steven Kamara – Staff Accountant.

Tell us what an average day in the life is like for you.

In Accounting, our main objective is to provide accurate information to internal and external users. I’m working with other departments daily to complete my piece of the puzzle. This could be taking care of accounts-payable duties for the Ops or Marketing departments by checking the status of an invoice, working on project budgets with the Client Insights teams, or creating prospect codes for the Sales team. By the time that puzzle is complete, our department is able to produce accurate financial statements for our leadership team, so they can plan for continued growth.

What is it like working on your team?

The Accounting team is pretty close (both in proximity and friendliness). This closeness makes it easy to collaborate throughout the day. No one ever feels out of place to ask a question or seek assistance. My boss literally sits right next to me and is never too busy to answer a question about work or just shoot the breeze.

What do you love most about your job?

The teamwork—it really does make the dream work. I work on my own most of the time, but collaborating with my team and others gives me a better view of the big picture that is SMG. Also, the casual dress code is pretty awesome. Although to be honest, it does make it harder to find something to wear.

How does your job contribute to our clients’ success?

I don’t communicate directly with the clients as much as our Client Insights teams, but I do support Client Insights needs from an accounting standpoint. Our team makes sure we create invoices accurately and in a timely manner for the Client Insights teams to send.

What would you tell someone interested in joining the SMG team?

Once you join the SMG team, you’re part of the SMG family. If you are willing to put in the effort, there are people all over the building willing to help you succeed.

How would you describe SMG in 3 words?
