After three months of fierce competition, another year of Kansas City Corporate Challenge (KCCC) is behind us. There were some highs for our team (dominating the swim meet with a record-breaking 47 unique competitors and a first-place finish at the meet) and a few lows (falling just 15 points short of winning our division). Our motto this year was Go all in, and I am proud to say that’s exactly what we did.
SMG has been competing in this annual Olympics-style games since 2002 and has 8 first-place trophies. The awards are cool and all, but to us, KCCC is much more than that. This event fits so well with our company culture—a focus on camaraderie, community, and competition. Here are a few reasons why more than 230 SMG employees signed up to bravely wear swim suits in front of coworkers, learn how the heck to play pickleball, and shred their hands in the tug-of-war finale.
Teamwork is everything
At SMG, no one works alone. We are a collection of teams that collaborate to help our clients be the best they can be. Corporate Challenge gives us the opportunity to portray that team spirit in another way. We show up for each other. We cheer each other on. We bond with coworkers that we don’t get to spend as much time with at the office. It evens the playing field, with our CEO in the trenches (or on the court) right there with us. This unity carries over and breaks down barriers back at work. It connects us.
We believe in community involvement
Even bigger than the fierce competition of Corporate Challenge is its humanitarian purpose. Each year, KCCC donates a portion of its proceeds to a local charitable organization. The 2018 Games raised more than $30,000 for their charity partner, Special Olympics Kansas City Metro. Giving back to our community is a big focus at SMG. Throughout the year, we hold blood drives, collect food for Harvesters, volunteer with Big Brothers Big Sisters, and so much more. Participating in KCCC is another way we are able to support a worthy cause and give back to the city we love. Each year, at our internal kickoff for the Games, we hold a breakfast bar fundraiser to help raise more money for the selected organization. This year we received over $400 in donations for Special Olympics.
A good challenge goes a long way
I’ve been a part of Corporate Challenge for 12 years, and my favorite thing is to see fellow coworkers doing things they never thought possible. Inch by inch, they get outside their comfort zone and next thing you know, they’re competing in their first triathlon or swimming their first IM. As a company, we are constantly pushing ourselves—how can we be better, stronger, more efficient? You can see that tenacity at KCCC. Sure, we’re into the competition and want to win first place. But more than that, we want to push ourselves. The personal victories are even more rewarding.
